Piezoresistive and self-actuated 128-cantilever arrays for nanotechnology applications

چکیده
Amajor limitation for future nanotechnology, particularly for bottom-up manufacturing is the non-availability of 2-dimensional massively parallel probe arrays. Scanning proximity probes are uniquely powerful tools for analysis, manipulation and bottom-up synthesis: they are capable of addressing and engineering surfaces at the atomic level and are the key to unlocking the full potential of Nanotechnology. Generic massively parallel intelligent cantilever-probe platforms is demonstrated through a number of existing and groundbreaking techniques. A packaged VLSI NEMS-chip (Very Large Scale Integrated Nano Electro Mechanical System) incorporating 128 proximal probes, fully addressable with control and readout interconnects and advanced software will be presented. 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Piezoresistive cantilever array for life sciences applications
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) techniques are used with oneor two-dimensional arrays of piezoresistive probes for parallel imaging. We present a newly designed AFM platform to drive these passivated piezoresistive cantilever arrays in air and liquid environments. Large area imaging in liquid as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological cells are demonstrated by the means of pie...

This paper reports on the fabrication and characterisation of self-actuating, and selfsensing cantilever arrays for large-scale parallel surface scanning. Each cantilever is integrated with a sharp silicon tip, a thermal-driven bimorph actuator, and a piezoresistive deflection sensor. Thus, the tip to the sample distance can be controlled individually for each cantilever. A radius of the tips b...

Future of analytical and manufacturing methods based on micro-mechanical cantilevers, depends critically on the ability to implement parallel operation and fast signal processing [1]. There are two mean reasons: high throughput requirement and complexity (multidimensionality) of analyzed value. In order to get parallel function, any single device should be simultaneously: recognizable, autonomo...
متن کاملUltra-sensitive NEMS-based cantilevers for sensing, scanned probe and very high-frequency applications.
Scanning probe microscopies (SPM) and cantilever-based sensors generally use low-frequency mechanical devices of microscale dimensions or larger. Almost universally, off-chip methods are used to sense displacement in these devices, but this approach is not suitable for nanoscale devices. Nanoscale mechanical sensors offer a greatly enhanced performance that is unattainable with microscale devic...
متن کاملA Short Review on Fabrication Methods of Micro-Cantilever for Ionic Electroactive Polymer Sensors/Actuators
Micro-electroactive polymers have wide applications from industry to healthcare. Artificial muscles, microvalves, microswitches, haptic sensing, blood pressure and pulse monitoring are some potential applications for micro-electroactive polymers. The most advantage of micro-electroactive polymers as sensors and actuators is bio-compatibility and low power threshold for large deformations...
